Q&A

What is Clothesworks?

Clothesworks is a nondenominational non-profit organization designed to help low-income women in Rockland and Orange Counties, N.Y., and Bergen County, N.J., move confidently into the workforce. We provide one outfit for a job interview or job training program. A second outfit is provided once employment is secured or upon completion of a job training program. Our goal is to provide women in transition with both the attire and the confidence necessary to obtain employment and independence. Clothesworks relies on clothing donations, both gently worn and new, and volunteer efforts of individuals and companies that are committed to helping women take charge of their lives.

Women are referred to Clothesworks by various non-profit and government social service agencies, which include community centers, job training and development programs, and homeless and domestic violence shelters. What is the history of Clothesworks?

Clothesworks was founded in 2001 by Rockland County residents Sally Heller, Barbara Kalvert and the late Susan Sobler, whose legacy of intelligence, vision and compassion continues to guide the program. We were originally housed in a space provided by the Child Assistance Program of Nyack, N.Y. The overwhelming response to the program confirmed its importance to the community. We are now located in a larger space in Haverstraw, N.Y., in the Catholic Community Services of Rockland/Catholic Charities building.
